Overall objective of the project
The objective of the project is to establish a sustainable management system for special categories of waste in two cantons: ZDC and CBC in 5 local government units that, as pilot municipalities, are involved in the project.
Specific Objectives
- Create a sustainable flow management system for special waste categories.
- Establish and test a flow management system for special waste categories in five local government units.
- Promote and encourage the acceptance, adoption and expansion of special waste management systems in the two cantons in BiH and beyond by conducting awareness campaigns, educating and informing citizens about the importance of separate collection and environmentally friendly disposal of special waste categories, and adequate dissemination measures.
The target groups to which the project activities referred were :
- Households / citizens living in the area of 5 LGUs participating in the project
- Schools and preschools, preschool children and elementary school students
- Competent waste management institutions: ministries, inspections, city and municipal services
- Business entities involved in waste management (collectors, operators, recyclers)
- Business community – small and medium enterprises (SMEs)
- Non-governmental organizations
- Media
Achieved results
- A system for managing the flows of special waste categories has been established
(Selected pilot LGUs that will participate in the project: City of Zenica, Busovača, Tešanj, Travnik and Žepče, formed a working group of the project which includes representatives of all stakeholders: municipalities, utilities, relevant cantonal ministries, cantonal inspections, FMOiT, federal Environmental Inspector, organized study trip to the Republic of Croatia with the aim of exchanging experiences and transfer of good practices, selected 6 types of special waste categories collected during the project, created a system for managing flows of special waste categories, prepared Waste Catalog, prepared document “ Business model for the special waste management system “) - Established infrastructure of the system for collection of special waste categories
(Established cooperation with authorized operators for special categories of waste covered by the project, analysis of the needs of selected municipalities and public utilities, purchased special containers for LGUs / PUCs that participated in the project, prepared sites for containers for collecting special categories of waste, opened and functional recycling yards in 5 local self-government units, conducted training of PUC employees for taking over and keeping records of waste that citizens handed over to recycling yards) - Tested (“Piloting”) a system for special waste streams
(Organized collection of 6 types of special waste categories and its collection by Alba and authorized operators, provided support to PUCs in keeping records of collected quantities of waste and legal obligations, collected and adequately disposed of a total of 45 tons of waste in 5 local governments, prepared document “Business case for management of special waste streams in the City of Zenica and the Municipalities of Busovača, Tešanj, Travnik and Žepče) - Raising awareness among citizens and SMEs and disseminating project results
(Initial research/conducting a survey on the disposal of special categories of waste, prepared the document “Communication Strategy / Strategy for raising public awareness”, created the visual identity of the project – logo and slogan, organized Info days for the media, street campaigns, promotion through local radio stations, contribution about the project on BHRT in the show Agro ekologika, seminars for primary school teachers and kindergarten teachers, competition of primary schools in waste collection, Round tables for all municipalities and PUCs from ZDC and CBC, development of promotional and educational materials: Info leaflets on recycling yards, leaflets for children in kindergartens and children in primary schools, educational / promotional video with children as actors, various promotional materials with the applied project logo, etc., conducted a final survey on the treatment of special waste categories which included 1,833 people from 5 LGUs who participated in the project, production and broadcasting of video materials, publication of articles in print and electronic media, etc.)
